The legend among the natives of Isla Mujeres is that when the Spaniards arrived in the island around the year 1517, Francisco Hernández de Córdoba sailed from Santiago de Cuba with three ships, to bring slaves for the mines, due to the lack of people in Cuba. Others say that he sailed to discover new lands and that he brought along with him Alaminos as captain, and that he arrived in Isla Mujeres, which he named so because of the idol goddesses he found on this land, such as Ixchel, Ixchebeliax, Ixbunic, Ixbunieta, which were dressed just from the waist downwards having their breasts uncovered like the Indian women. They also found a temple made of stone, which astonished them by its golden utensils which they took away.
